Our Second Hand Lawn Mowers and Other Used Garden Machinery

At Mowbile Mowers, we pride ourselves on offering you, our customers, with a range of new garden equipment from a variety of companies. With lots of new, shiny machinery available on our online store, there’s something there for all of your horticultural needs.

However, we understand that buying a brand-new lawnmower might not be at the top of everybody’s priorities, especially for those working on a limited budget. This is exactly why we also offer second hand lawn mowers and other used garden equipment.

Our guide to buying second hand lawn mowers and other used equipment

The second hand market can be daunting for many people, especially first time buyers. There are 1000’s of options out there, not only in terms of products, but selling sites, too. We’ve put together a quick guide to buying used mowers and other equipment to help you  when scouring the internet for a second-hand bargain.

Start with research

The first step in any second-hand purchase should be research. Find out about as many different brands as you can, what they’re known for (both in terms of good points and bad), models, features etc. Having knowledge of different brands will set you in a good place for looking across a range of different used goods.

It’s also a good idea to research what YOU need. Do you need a specific feature, a specific model, size? Before you go about searching for an item, make sure you know what you need from your item.

Make sure the price is right

Arguably part of the research phase is knowing your prices. Once you know roughly what you want, you need to know what is a good price and what is a bad one. Points to consider are how much use the machine has had, what it has been used for, who it has been used by, whether there are any known issues cosmetically or functionally. Knowing different values for the same item based on its use is a good thing to know, that way you can narrow down your options and identify a good price for what you’re looking for.

Equally, it’s a good idea to be wary of items where the price seems off. A used lawnmower for £2, described as being in perfect condition, may well have issues that the seller isn’t mentioning. Sometimes, however, people are just looking for a quick sale, so it’s always worth querying why a buyer is selling an item.

Who is the seller?

When it comes to sellers, they come in all different shapes and sizes. From small retailers to big brands, young families to elderly individuals – there are a huge amount of people selling in the second hand market out there. It’s a good idea to be wary of sellers who seem off, and only a good sense of perception can tell you who is right and who isn’t.

Know your prices and you’ll be able to be aware of companies who are trying to sell a second hand item for more than its worth. However, when it comes to purchasing from businesses, also be aware that they may be offering more than just the item. Often, used machinery will have received a full service, a good clean and may even come with warranty in some circumstances. This in itself, can add value to a product immensely.

Where is the item?

There is no use buying a piece of used garden machinery if it’s going to cost you more than the item itself. Knowing where the product you’re buying is and how you’re going to transport it home is important, so make sure this is something you have considered.

Many businesses offer a delivery service, which may just swing who you purchased from.

Test it

Being able to test your item is never a bad idea. Genuine sellers will often let you test them before you take them away. If they don’t, question why and be cautious of their response. If the item isn’t what you expected, don’t be afraid to walk away or say no. There is no point in going ahead with a sale unless you and your needs are satisfied, you can always find another item that is more suitable (if you have time) and the seller can find another buyer.
